For parents of year 3/5/7 & 9 students, May is NAPLAN month. The lead up to the second week of May can be a very anxious time for students, parents and teachers. The test covers reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

The test was introduced in 2008 with the original intention to provide information on your child’s progress in relation to the curriculum being taught. In recent times students, parents and teachers are dealing with increased stress leading up to NAPLAN testing. We need to ask why this is occurring, has the purpose of NAPLAN changed? Are there additional pressures that have developed since its implementation? I recently read an article “When the Diagnosis becomes the Disease”, that provides an interesting perspective as to what is occurring with the NAPLAN process.
